“A Separation” makes Oscar history

Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation” has become the first Iranian film to win an Oscar, collecting the award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th annual Academy Awards ceremonies.

The Oscar ceremonies were held Sunday night in Hollywood.

Farhadi accepted the award saying while politicians have been using the language of “war, intimidation and aggression” about Iran, his country is presented “here through her glorious culture, a rich and ancient culture that has been hidden under the heavy dust of politics.”

Farhadi added: “I proudly offer this award to the people of my country, the people who respect all cultures and civilizations and despise hostility and resentment.”

Disputes over Iran’s nuclear program in the past months have triggered talks of possible military attacks on Iran in order to halt its nuclear activities. Iran insists that its nuclear program is peaceful and it has a right to use nuclear energy to produce energy and medical isotopes.

A Separation, which has become the most successful film in Iranian history, has already won numerous international awards including Berlin’s Golden Bear award and France’s Cesar award.
