IAEA delegation returns to Iran
Herman Nackaerts

The International Atomic Energy Agency delegation is visiting Iran for the second time in the past month.

Iranian media report that the IAEA delegation entered Iran Monday morning to clear up all ambiguities around the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities.

The delegation is once again headed by IAEA chief inspector Herman Nackaerts. Before leaving for Iran, he expressed optimism that in its second visit, the IAEA delegation will get a chance to discuss possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program and reach a tangible outcome for all outstanding issues.

The delegation was in Tehran in January for a three-day visit.

The first visit did not include any inspections of nuclear facilities, and it is not yet clear if any such inspections have been scheduled for this trip.

Nackaerts has already announced that the priority of this visit is to discuss the “possible military dimensions” of Iran’s nuclear program, adding that this is a “complex and time-consuming” matter.

Iran denies having any military ambitions in its nuclear activities and insists that its entire nuclear program is aimed at the peaceful projects of energy production and medical research.

Meanwhile, Iran has delivered a letter to G5+1 representative Catherine Ashton, announcing its willingness to resume nuclear talks with world powers.

The letter has been welcomed by the European Union and United States as a positive move.
