Iran rejects bombing accusations
Ramin Mehmanparast

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has denounced recent allegations that Iran carried out terrorist attacks in Bangkok, adding that the “friendly and historic ties between Iran and Thailand are being targeted by these false claims.”

Mehmanparast rejected the accusation from Israel, calling it a continuation of the “false accusations” about Iran’s involvement in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States.

Yesterday, Bangkok was rocked by three bombings. In one case, a man identified by police as an Iranian named Saeed Moradi was allegedly carrying one of the bombs, which blew off one of his legs when he detonated it.

Thai police say Moradi may be the main perpetrator of the three explosions.

Another suspect was arrested at Bangkok Airport in connection with the bombing, and a third suspect has yet to be located.

The explosions came a day after two explosions in India and Georgia targeted Israeli embassies, and Israel has accused Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah of being involved in them.

Mehmanparast had already denied Iran’s involvement in the previous bombings, saying they were were carried out by Iran’s accusers.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak, who is now travelling in Asia, accused Iran of having a hand in the Bangkok bombing.

In Singapore he told the media: “The attempted terror attack in Thailand proves once again that Iran and its proxies continue to operate in the ways of terror.”

According to Mehmanparast, the accusations are part of a conspiracy. He pointed out that Israel and the U.S. had tried earlier this month to depict Bangkok as being under the threat of terrorist attacks, which, Mehmanparast said, “was met with the insightful actions of the Thai police.” He added: “However, the episode shows the Zionist regime preparing the scene for the current scenarios.”

In January, Thai police arrested a Lebanese national suspected of trying to carry out terrorist attacks in Thailand. He was reportedly in possession of material used for making bombs.

According to Thai police, the suspect was identified as Etris Hussein. He was holding a Swedish passport and allegedly has ties to Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

Mehmanparast emphasized that the Islamic Republic condemns any form of terrorist attack and he pointed to Israel as the culprit in recent attacks because of its “secret and criminal objectives.” He also said that Iran is prepared to cooperate with Thai police to clarify the dimension of the recent attacks.
