Move to question president gains momentum
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Iranian lawmakers have once again announced that they will summon President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Parliament in March to be questioned on a series of irregularities carried out by his administration.

MP Mostafa Rezahosseini told the Mehr News Agency: “The initiators of the motion to question the president are not satisfied with the answers they’ve received so far from government representatives.”

The motion to question the president has been in the making since last July but it has been delayed because the number of signatures it carried has fluctuated, as government representatives made every effort to convince MPs to withdraw their support.

According to parliamentary regulations, such a motion needs the signatures of at least a quarter of MPs, or 73 signatures from the 290-member Parliament.

While a group of parliamentarians has been adamant about the need for questioning Ahmadinejad, some appear to be concerned that he might use the platform to reveal scandalous details about dealings in the establishment.
