Britain and U.S. consider attack on Iran

While The Guardian reports that the British military has stepped up plans for an attack on Iran, analysts say such an attack would be disastrous, insisting that “engagement is the only course to take.”

The UK daily reported yesterday that Britain is stepping up contingency planning for a possible military attack against Iran over concerns about Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

While Iran insists that all its nuclear activities are peaceful, the West is concerned that uranium enrichment capabilities will be used for the production of nuclear military weapons.

The Guardian reports that a number of Whitehall and defence officials have indicated that Iran has become a focus of diplomatic concerns now that the situation has calmed in Libya, adding, however, that U.S. President Barack Obama is not interested in any new military ventures before next year’s U.S. elections.

The report adds that the upcoming report from the International Atomic Energy Agency could be the deciding factor for Britain.

In an analysis of a possible military attack on Iran, another Guardian report today warns that “an attack on Iran would halt and reverse moves to reform. The Arab spring would become an Arab winter with disastrous consequences for U.S. and European interests as well as Arab societies.”
