Iran denies involvement in Syrian politics
Ramin Mehmanparast

Iran is denying accusations that the Qods Revolutionary Guards, the international branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, has had a hand in recent developments in Syria, describing the allegations as “unsubstantiated and baseless.”

The Mehr News Agency reports that Ramin Mehmanparast, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said on Monday that the government and the people of Syria have the “political and social maturity” to let them resolve their own problems. He added that the Islamic Republic completely denies playing any role in Syria.

The European Union recently imposed sanctions on the Qods Guards for their alleged role in crushing Syrian protests.

The move restricts Qods Guards members and 15 Syrian officials from traveling to Europe and freezes all of their European assets.

For similar reasons, the EU blacklisted two Iranian Revolutionary Guards commanders and the deputy intelligence commander of the IRGC in July.

The United States has also made similar accusations against the Qods Guards.

For the past six months in Syria, Beshar Assad’s regime has been facing widespread anti-government protests, which the Syrian government describes as a foreign conspiracy.
