Iran wants Russia to press for end to sanctions
Alaeddin Boroujerdi

The head of the Iranian Parliament’s Foreign Policy Commission says that in the spirit of Russia’s “step by step” plan, that country should take a step of its own: pressuring the U.S. to end sanctions against Iran.

The Mehr News Agency reports that Alaeddin Boroujerdi said: “Iran has already taken major steps in clarifying its peaceful nuclear activities” and, therefore, the Russians should take a step by pushing the U.S. toward eliminating sanctions against Iran.

Russia’s proposal to revive nuclear talks between the G5+1 and Iran stipulates that Iran would be rewarded with loosened sanctions every time it responds to a question from the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding its nuclear program.

Nicolai Patrushev, the head of the Russian Security Commission, travelled to Iran last week, and the Iranian foreign minister went to Russia to discuss the plan.

Iranian authorities have expressed support for the plan as long as the steps are mutual.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has described the talks with Iranian officials as “very successful.”

While the West is concerned that the Iranian nuclear program could have military objectives, Iran insists that all its activities are peaceful.
