Protests planned in 25 cities in support of Iranian political prisoners

Protests have been organized in 25 cities around the world today, June 25, to condemn the deaths of Haleh Sahabi and Reza Hoda Saber, and to show solidarity with prisoners on a hunger strike at two Iranian prisons.

The prisoners are protesting the role played by authorities in the deaths of Sahabi and Saber.

The Green Protest Campaign has called on supporters of the Green Movement, the protest movement that took shape in the aftermath of the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009, to join demonstrations in cities all around the world to commemorate the deceased prisoners and to protest the “systematic violence against political prisoners” that led to the deaths of Sahabi and Hoda Saber.

The campaign has urged Iranians abroad to participate in the protests and to sport black symbols that echo the plight of all political prisoners.

Meanwhile, Kaleme cites a number of Evin Prison staff saying that authorities have threatened the prisoners with longer sentences in return for their resistance.

Currently 12 prisoners in Evin Prison and six in Rejaishahr Prison are refusing food.
