Jailed activist’s hunger strike raises concerns
Mohsen Aminzadeh

Mahnaz Asgharzadeh, the wife of jailed Iranian activist Mohsen Aminzadeh, has expressed grave concern over her husband’s well-being. He recently joined a hunger strike to protest the death of Reza Hoda Saber, another political prisoner who was Aminzadeh’s fellow inmate.

Persian BBC reports that Aminzadeh returned to Evin Prison on Tuesday June 21, following a temporary medical leave, and he soon joined the hunger strike.

His wife says Aminzadeh had been given leave to receive treatment for a kidney ailment. He was advised by authorities to avoid Hoda Saber’s funeral but, according to his wife, Aminzadeh insisted on attending.

Asgharzadeh says her husband was immediately recalled to prison after attending the funeral, even though his treatment had not run its course.

Yesterday, the Kaleme website reported that Aminzadeh has not been transferred to the infirmary, despite an increase in his blood pressure.

Asgharzadeh reports that she is allowed to visit her husband every Monday. There is no way of getting news in between these visits because the phone is cut off in Ward 350 of Evin Prison.

Several senior political figures have urged the prisoners to end their hunger strike, citing concern for their well-being.
