Iranian doctors call for end to hunger strike

The Islamic Association of Iranian Physicians has called on 12 political prisoners to end their hunger strike.

Kaleme opposition website quotes an association statement, saying: “Your determination to go on hunger strike in protest is commendable, in view of what happened to your peer and martyred inmate, Hoda Saber; however, we cannot keep silent regarding the threat to your lives, and your families and the people are gravely concerned for your health.”

The announcement urges the prisoners to stop their hunger strike on Monday evening so that they may all join in a political fast on Tuesday June 21.

Twelve Iranian political prisoners, including journalists and prominent activists, announced Saturday that they have started a hunger strike to protest the deaths of two jailed Nationalist-religious activists, Haleh Sahabi and Reza Hoda Saber.

Sahabi, on a temporary leave from prison, died when her father’s funeral was raided by security forces. Saber was on the tenth day of a hunger strike to protest Sahabi’s death when he himself died. Sixty-four inmates from his prison issued a statement saying Saber had been badly beaten on the 8th day of his strike, which they say precipitated his heart attack.
