Ahmadinejad aides targeted by Parliament
Esfandiar Rahim Mashai and Hamid Baghai

Iran’s Parliament announced that it has received a series of reports questioning the actions of Esfandiar Rahim Mashai and Hamid Baghai, two chief presidential aides to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Fars reports that the complaints passed along to Parliament refer to a “disruption perpetuated by the deviant current in the country’s administration.”

Fars adds that this reported disruption is said to manifest itself “in the administration of the country through interference in the hiring and firing of staff and through misappropriation of funds.”

While the parliamentary committee confirms the receipt of reports against Mashai and Baghai, it says the reports have not yet been reviewed and may or may not be true.

The Islamic Republic conservative elite refers to the president’s chief of staff, Esfandiar Rahim Mashai, as the leader of a “deviant current” that is trying to alter the composition of the country’s leadership.

In recent months, top political figures in the establishment have targeted Mashai with severe criticism; however, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has resisted the pressure to remove him from his administration.

The conservative elite is chiefly concerned that the so-called “deviant current” is preparing to influence the parliamentary elections next March.
