Iran does not want to build nuclear weapons: Russia
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Mahmoud Ahamdinejad has made it clear that Iran has no intention of building nuclear weapons, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Accordign to Russian news agency, Ria Novosti, the declaration came after a meeting between Ahamdinejad, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, held during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) sumit in Astana, Kazakhstan. Lavrov said: "The Iranian president has once again declared unequivocally that he has no intention of possessing a nuclear weapon.”

He added: “We heard a reassurance from the Iranian president that additional steps will be made to ensure greater transparency of the Iranian nuclear program as Tehran works with the IAEA."

Earlier this month, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano raised the possibility that Iran’s nuclear program may have military dimensions. He said he had urged the head of Iran’s atomic agency for further cooperation to clear up ambiguities.

Iran has repeatedly emphasized the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, categorically denying it has any military objectives.
