Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif began a three-day visit to Iraq on Sunday to discuss security matters as well as issues around the formation of Iraq’s new cabinet.
The Fars News Agency reports that Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari was at the airport to officially receive Zarif on Sunday August 24.
Zarif has already met with former Iraqi prime minister Nouri Al-Maleki and the current prime minister, Haider Abadi.
The Iranian foreign minister commended the former prime minister for his efforts in “fighting terrorism” and said: “We are happy that we were able to assist you on this path as much as possible.”
Zairf also met with Iraqi President Fouad Massoum, the head of Iraq’s Supreme Council, Omar Hakim, and the head of the Sunni Parliament, Salim Jabouri.
Zarif will travel to Najaf to meet with senior members of the Iraqi clergy. On Tuesday he will travel to Kurdistan to meet with Kurdish leaders.
