The Iranian Minister of Labour says the government’s nutrition-support program has begun to distribute food baskets to 8.5 million citizens through public health offices. Minister Ali Rabii said the project is a way to fight poverty and prevent malnutrition.
He said the program has a budget of 2.4 billion toumans and a goal of distributing food four times a year to eligible Iranians. He added that the food baskets target deficiencies in protein and vitamins.
The food baskets will contain “meat, poultry, eggs, rice, oil, pasta, tomato paste and dates.”
Eligible participants will be given credit cards that can be used to obtain the food items from participating grocery stores. Each allotment can be spent throughout the four-month period, after which the credit will expire if not used.
Iran is grappling with rising inflation since the world powers imposed trade sanctions on Iran.
