Opposition says security forces killed student in Shiraz
Hamed Normohammadi

Opposition websites are reporting that another student was killed during Sunday’s street protests in Shiraz, but the semi-official FARS news agency says a car accident caused his death.

Daneshjoo news, an opposition website that focuses on student activities, has reported that Hamed Normohammadi, a Shiraz University environmental studies major, was killed on Sunday “while trying to escape security and Basij forces.”

Eyewitnesses have told Daneshjoo news that Normohammadi was thrown off a bridge by the security forces and only then was he run over by a car.

Another opposition website, Jaras, has confirmed that version of events and added that the Freedom-seeking Students of Shiraz, a student group, has announced a week of mourning in honour of Normohammadi.

The university administration has also attributed the student’s death to a vehicle accident.

This is not the first time the government and opposition forces are at odds regarding fatalities that have occurred during protests.

While the government insists that Saneh Jaleh, a student killed in Tehran by gunshot during the February 14 demonstrations, was killed by anti-government elements, his classmates insist Jaleh was an active participant in anti-government rallies and was killed by security forces.

Iranian opposition leaders called for a rally on February 14 in solidarity with the recent Arab uprisings. The widespread protests that resulted all across Tehran and in other major cities were followed by another rally call for last Sunday, to commemorate the two students killed on February 14.

Security and pro-government forces mostly succeeded in preventing people from gathering in large groups, but not in Shiraz and Rasht, according to opposition websites.
