Detained Iranian blogger refused leave to get surgery
Hossein Ronaghi-Maleki

Iranian authorities have refused to let detained Iranian blogger Hossein Ronaghi-Maleki out of jail for urgently needed kidney surgery, HRANA reports.

Ronaghi-Maleki did not suffer from any ailments at the time of his arrest one year ago, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, and he developed the serious kidney infection while in prison.

He was arrested in December of 2009 during the government crackdown on election protesters. In addition to blogging, Ronaghi-Maleki is a human rights activist who heads the Iran Proxy Committee.

HRANA writes that Ronaghi-Maleki was held in solitary confinement for more than a year and, after enduring severe mental and physical abuse, was “sentenced to 15 years in prison in an illegal court by Judge Pirabbasi.”

He was charged with being a member of the Iran Proxy network and insulting the leadership and the president.

Last week, 100 Iranian political and civil activists issued a statement condemning the authorities’ refusal to grant him leave on bail and calling for his immediate release.
