Jailed activist concenred for his family’s safety
Majid Tavakoli

Concerned for his family’s safety, jailed Iranian student activist, urged the media, opposition leaders and political and student activists to refrain from contacting his family.

Daneshjoo news website reports that Tavakoli has said: “This silence may have bitter consequences but I would be satisfied if at least it allows some degree of peace for my family.”

Reportedly last week, Shiraz intelligence officials raided his father’s home while interrogating his brother, Ali Tavakoli at their office. The authorities also confiscated a number of documents, books and computer equipment from their home before releasing his brother.

Tavakoli writes that his brother has been asked: “Why did my father meet with Mr. Karroubi and Nouri? Why do my university friends visit my home? Why did my parents talked with Mr. Mousavi, Mr. Karroubi, Mrs. Rahnavard and Mrs. Ebadi when these people called them at home? Why do people call from abroad and express their support? Why do we receive letters and postcards from Iranian and foreign friends?”

Tavakoli was arrested in December of 2009 on National Student’s Day after giving an anti-government speech at the university and has been sentenced to 8.5 years in prison.

He was also arrested and imprisoned for another two and a half years in 2007 and 2008 for his political activities.
