Former leader’s memorial disrupted by chanters

A number of people taking part in the Memorial Service for the late Islamic Republic leader Ayatollah Khomeini were arrested by plainclothes officers.

The Islamic Republic daily reported on Saturday that people who had been chanting in support of President Hassan Rohani were arrested at the end of the ceremony.

The report adds that they were released after questioning and their names and addresses were registered.

The report adds that a group of attendees tried to disrupt President Rohani’s speech by chanting the slogan “Nuclear power is our absolute right!” But after a brief interruption, the president began to speak more loudly and said it certainly is “our right”.

Rohani reportedly said that the people should be assured that through wisdom, moderation and hope, “this great nation” will achieve all its objectives. The crowd then reportedly silenced disruptors with chants of “Allah Akbar!” in support of President Rohani’s statement.

The report goes on to say that some of the people who chanted “Allah Akbar!” in support of the president were briefly arrested at the end of the ceremony.
