Iran’s Department of the Environment has announced that 30 to 40 percent of swamps in the country have disappeared.
ISNA reports that the head of climate change for the DOE told a seminar: “Iran has 32 million hectares of desert and currently 30 to 40 percent of its swamps have dried out.”
The report adds that in the past 10 years, rainfall in Iran has declined by 10 percent and dust storms have risen by 40 percent.
In recent years, many of Iran’s lakes and swamps have been faced with falling water levels and drying out.
The drying out of the country’s largest inland lake, Lake Oroumiyeh, is one such case that has repeatedly made headlines, and a solution for its rescue is of major concern to the current government.
