Iranian FM to brief Parliament on UN visit, historic phone call

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will report to the Iranian Parliament regarding the phone call placed by the U.S. president to the Iranian president.

IRNA reports that a spokesman for Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission announced that on Tuesday October 1, Mr. Zarif will present a report assessing President Hassan Rohani’s trip to New York.

The Commission has told Tasnim website that the FM is going to provide certain explanations regarding Rohani’s meetings with officials from several countries as well as his telephone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama.

On September 27, Obama telephoned Rohani in New York, marking the first time a U.S. president has spoken to an Iranian president.

The Iranian president’s trip to the U.S. and his speech at the UN General Assembly have been seen generally in a positive light by Islamic Republic hardliners.

Meanwhile, Western powers have also found their meetings with their Iranian counterparts to be positive and constructive.

Nuclear talks are scheduled to take place in mid-October. Rohani has moved the nuclear file back to the foreign ministry and has announced that he has full authority from the Iranian Supreme Leader to forge an agreement.
