Obama says Iran opening up for talks

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Tuesday September 17 that there are indications his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rohani, is inclined toward holding talks with the U.S. and the West.

In an interview with the Spanish TV network Telemundo, Obama said it appears that Rohani is willing to open a dialogue with the U.S. and the West.

The U.S. president maintained: "There is an opportunity here for diplomacy, and I hope Iranians take advantage of it."

"There are indications that Rouhani, the new president, is somebody who is looking to open dialogue with the West and with the United States, in a way that we haven't seen in the past. And so we should test it," Obama said on Tuesday.

He stressed that Iran must show decisively that it does not intend to use nuclear energy for military purposes.

Iran has constantly maintained that it has no intention of developing nuclear arms and that its nuclear program is peaceful.

The U.S. president confirmed once again that he has exchanged letters with Hassan Rohani, adding that the correspondence is an indication of the U.S. desire to resolve the nuclear disputes with Iran and witness the country's return to the global community.
