Amid speculation about an imminent U.S. attack on Syria, Iran’s foreign minister said on Monday September 9 that Iran and the U.S. have exchanged messages regarding Syria.
IRNA reports that Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters on his return from Iraq: “Right now we have no plans for direct talks with the U.S.” He added that “Certain messages have been exchanged between Iran and the U.S. in this regard, and if need be we shall take similar measures.”
Zarif added: “We hope that the U.S. will heed the warnings in these messages and prevent a new war from developing in the region.”
No further details were given regarding the messages exchanged between Tehran and Washington.
Meanwhile, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, is in Moscow at the same time as Syrian foreign minister Walid Muallem.
Muallem announced in Moscow that Syria welcomes Russia’s proposal to establish international monitoring of Syria’s chemical weapons.
