UN investigators enter Camp Ashraf

A group of UN inspectors entered Camp Ashraf on September 2 to investigate the deaths one day earlier of dozens of members of the dissident Iranian group People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran.

AFP reports that a spokesman for the UN delegation said the inspectors will make every effort to clarify what occurred in the camp.

Meanwhile, Iraqi President Nouri Al-Maleki has also sent a delegation to investigate the incident.

The Iraqi government has announced that its delegation began its investigations last night and will announce its findings in the next few days.

The People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran claims that 52 of its members were killed in Camp Ashraf and alleges that the Nouri Al-Maleki government collaborated with Iran to orchestrate the attack.

The Iraqi government has stated that it can no longer keep the members of People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran in Iraqi territory and has called for their removal from Iraq. The U.S. and the UN have been involved in the transfer of Camp Ashraf residents to another country.
