Iran enlisted to get Syria to the table for peace talks

Iran has been called on to use its influence with the Syrian government to convince it to attend peace talks in Geneva.

Reuters reported on Tuesday August 27 that U.S. Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman has been in Tehran since Sunday.

UN Spokesman Farhan Haq told the media: “Mr. Feltman shared the UN position that Iran, given its influence and leadership in the region, has an important role to play and a responsibility in helping to bring the Syrian parties to the negotiating table.”

Haq added that the topics discussed with Iranian officials were  “the worsening situation on the ground in Syria, including the UN’s grave concerns about the potential use of chemical weapons, and how the UN can work together with Iran and other states to end the bloodshed and suffering of the Syrian people.”

The Syrian conflict has claimed more than 100,000 victims so far, yet the prospect is dim for successful peace talks.
