Quemars Kalantari, the head of Esfahan Province, announced that the evaporation of the Gavekhoni Lagoon has turned the area into “a source of dust particles and air pollution in the province.”
Kalantari told IRNA that the drying up of the Zayandeh River has had a similar effect on the lagoon, which has led to other devastating consequences.
He stressed that providing water for the lagoon is vital for the preservation of the province’s environment.
Environmental activists have called for better strategies to fight desertification before cities become overwhelmed with the dust particles produced by the dried-out lands.
