Iranian filmmaker killed while documenting Syrian conflict
Hadi Baghbani

An Iranian documentary filmmaker was killed this week by opposition forces in Syria. The Mehr News Agency reports that Hadi Baghbani, an Iranian reporter and documentary filmmaker, was killed in “conflicts with the terrorists in the suburbs of Damascus.”

According to the reports, the funeral will be held on August 21 and his remains will be returned to his birthplace, Babolsar.

Mehr has given no further details about Baghbani’s death. However, other sources have reported that Baghbani was killed on Monday August 19.

Fars News Agency reports that Baghbani, who was 30 years old, leaves behind a three-year-old child.

Morteza Shaabani, also involved in war documentary filmmaking, told Fars that Baghbani was making his second trip to Syria with a three-person crew.

Shaabini added that in the past two years, several documentary filmmakers have gone to Syria to “record the events and Salafi crimes.”

He went on to say while there are no details at hand about Baghbani’s death, they know that in recent weeks government forces have “won several victories”, and the Iranian documentary crew was moving along with these forces when it was targeted in an attack.

Shaabani said the various documentary groups active in Syria have consistently faced dangers like being shot at, and his own driver was killed.
