Fatal ferry accident to be investigated

The head of Iran’s judiciary has called for a probe into the ferry accident last Wednesday at Karoon Dam in southwestern Iran.

The Mehr News Agency reports that Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani charged the Prosecutor General to dispatch a delegation to the region to investigate.

On Wednesday July 31, a bus carrying local passengers was being ferried across the waters of the Karoon Dam when the ferry overturned, leading to the death of five women and seven children.

Reports indicate that since the construction of the Karoon Dam in 2004, the old bridge connecting the villages in the region was destroyed, and people have been using ferries or boats to cross the river.

According to the Mehr News Agency, 12,000 residents of surrounding villages are surrounded by water and face hazardous commutes. The report also indicates that there is no ferry service at night and medical emergencies have been a grave concern for residents.
