Iranian minister slams EU blacklist of Hezbollah

The Iranian Foreign Minister has denounced the EU decision to place the military arm of Lebanon’s Hezbollah on its list of terrorist organizations.

On Tuesday July 23, Ali Akbar Salehi said the EU decision against the Hezbollah Movement “goes against political and legal principles and is unacceptable.”

Ali Akbar Salehi said the move is heavily biased and a result of pressure from the more influential members of the European Union.

“To brand a group as a terrorist group when it has been resisting against invasion and occupation and has a legitimate presence in the Lebanese government with popular backing, that only reveals the shallow reasoning behind it,” Salehi argued.

Hezbollah is a political organization in Lebanon with representation in the country’s parliament and it has had members in a number of coalition governments in that country.

In 2006, when Israel attacked southern Lebanon, the military branch of Hezbollah took over the defence of the country.

Ali Akbar Salehi warned the EU is trying to influence developments in the region but is taking the wrong route because it lacks a correct analysis of the situation.

He stressed that Iran condemns the EU move and supports the “rightful struggles of Hezbollah against the Zionist regime.”
