Exiled group claims Iran building secret nuclear base

The exiled dissident Iranian group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran claims it has evidence that proves a secret underground nuclear base is under construction near the city of Damavand, 70 km from Tehran.

Reuters reports that the announcement issued by National Council of Resistance (NCRI), of which the People’s Mujahedin is a main member, also exposed information about Iran’s uranium enrichment facility in Natanz in 2002 and the heavy water facility in Arak.

The Reuters report indicates that NCRI has “a mixed track record and a clear political agenda.”

The new announcement by the group comes less than a month after the election of the new president, Hassan Rohani, who has promised to change Iran’s handling of its nuclear disputes, boosting hope that a resolution could be in sight

Iran has continually maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful.

The NCRI claims that the PMOI has reportedly “obtained reliable information on a new and completely secret site designated for [Iran's] nuclear project".

The PMOI is the political group that fought alongside Saddam Hussein’s forces in the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s. Some members of the group are still stranded in Iraq and seeking asylum in other countries, since the current Iraqi government no longer wants them in Iraq.

Reuters reports that the group has released satellite photographs that do not appear conclusive.
