Judiciary officials accused in torture, deaths get off lightly

The case against judiciary officials accused of perpetuating the torture of detainees and the death of at least three of them culminated with a mere slap on the wrist, Iranian media report.

On Tuesday July 2, the Mehr News Agency reports that former Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi, his assistant, Ali Akbar Heydarifar, and Judge Haddad were sentence to permanent dismissal from the judiciary for illegal arrests. They are also barred for five years from entering any public employment.

Saeed Mortazavi, who was charged with complicity in murder, was found innocent of that charge and was only fined 200,000 rials for the charge of “giving a false report.”

The three judiciary officials were charged with issuing the order to transfer detainees to Kahrizak Prison during the election protests of 2009, knowing that they would be subjected to mistreatment. The transfer resulted in the death of at least three detainees: Amir Javadifar, Mohsen Ruholamini and Mohammad Kamrani.

Reports indicate that the sentences could be appealed within 20 days of their issuance.
