Campaign urges pre-election freedom in media, politics

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran is calling on the Islamic Republic to end the oppression of the media and dissidents in the lead-up to the eleventh elections.

The rights group emphasizes Iranian officials must end the censorship of newspapers and websites, halt the arrest of political activists and drop restrictions on foreign press activities in Iran.

The campaign refers to threats issued by Massoud Jazaeri, deputy head of the Armed Forces, and writes: “In the past 10 days, a number of political activists and members of campaign headquarters of presidential candidates have been arrested at campaign gatherings or in their homes. In addition, journalists who were arrested following the 2009 election and were given furloughs, have once more been summoned back to prison.”

The Campaign also points to the pressure imposed on the families of workers at Radio Farda, the arrest of four Nationalist-religious activists, the filtering of internet sites such as Mehr News Agency and Sarat News, and Internet censorship all across the country.
