Southern port city revisited by quake, aftershocks

Jask Port in Hormozgan province was shaken by another earthquake measured at 6.2 on the Richter scale, and official reports say the quake left one person dead, 17 injured and 400 buildings damaged.

Reports from Iran’s Seismology Centre indicate the earthquake struck the southern Iranian city at 6:38 AM on Saturday May 11 at a depth of 15 kilometres.

The three aftershocks that followed came within an hour of each other, with the last one registering as large as 5.6 on the Richter scale.

At 7 AM, the city of Minab was also shaken by two earthquakes measured at 4.7 and 4.8 on the Richter scale at a depth of 20 kilometres.

Jask Port, with a population of 12,000, and Minab, population 255,000, are about 200 kilometres apart.

Jask Port had been struck by a magnitude 5 earthquake just two days earlier but no fatalities were reported.

Iran has been experiencing several earthquakes in recent months with the strongest, measured at 7.8 on the Richter scale, hitting Sistan-Baluchistan in the country’s southeast.
