Iran’s Foreign Ministry says there are no obstacles standing in the way of establishing direct talks with the United States.
ISNA reports that ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told state television: “In the meetings we have had so far, the Americans have on several occasions proposed having direct talks. As the Supreme Leader said, we are not very optimistic as to the outcome of such talks yet we do not oppose them.”
He added that if direct talks came to be seen as having a positive outcome, under any circumstances within the frameworks defined by the leader, those talks would be “not prohibited.”
He added that so far no direct talks have taken place. He claimed that the U.S. called for direct talks with Iran in Almaty, Kazakhstan, but the Iranian negotiators did not accept the proposal.
Iranian-U.S. diplomatic relations have been severed since 1979.
