UAE feels tremors from Iran’s deadly earthquake

The earthquake that hit Iran’s southwestern province of Khuzestan yesterday, on April 9, at a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale was reportedly felt as far away as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The Mehr News Agency reports that according to the latest statistics released on Wednesday April 10, so far 37 people have been killed and 850 injured by the earthquake.

Bushehr government spokesman Fareydoon Hassanvand also told Mehr that 700 residential buildings were completely destroyed and many more have sustained damage of anywhere from 30 to 40 percent.

IRNA reported that the National Seismic Centre registered seven quakes in the Kaki region of Bushehr in just 38 minutes.

Tehran University’s geophysics centre registered the quake’s magnitude at 6.1 on the Richter scale, but the U.S. Geology Centre has calculated it as 6.3.

Officials at the Bushehr Nuclear Power plant have confirmed that the quake did not affect the plant, adding that the nuclear facility is built to endure earthquakes as strong as 8 on the Richter scale.
