Political prisoners get furlough in advance of New Year

Shiva Nazar-Ahari and Mohammad Hossein Naimipor, two Iranian political prisoners, were given a furlough less than a week before the Iranian New Year.

The Kaleme website reports the two activists were released on the evening of Tuesday March 13.

Nazar-Ahari, who has been arrested on several occasions for her human rights activities, was last arrested in December of 2009 en route to Qom with several other activists to attend the funeral of dissident cleric Ayatollah Montazeri.

She had been held for two months in solitary confinement and went on a hunger strike to protest her situation in prison. She was finally given a temporary leave on bail after nine months in jail.

She was later sentenced to four years in jail and 74 lashes for the charges of “enmity against God, propaganda against the regime and illegal assembly with the purpose of disturbing national security.”

Mohammad Hossein Naimipour is the son of prominent reformist Mohammad Naimipour and director of the banned daily Yas-e No. He was arrested last year and sentenced to four years in jail.
