MEK refugee camp in Iraq target of rocket attack
Camp Liberty

The refugee camp of Iranian dissident group Mujahedin-e Khalq in Iraq, has been hit with rockets leaving at least six people dead.

According to associated Press Iraqi police reported that the rocket attacks on Liberty Camp has killed 6 people and wounded more that 40 and so far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Liberty Camp was supposed to be a temporary stop for the group until the UN work out the details of their resettlement abroad.

The Mojahedin-e Khalq established themselves in Iraq during the war between Iran- Iraq in the 1980s. As a dissident group fighting against Iranian government, they were settled in Camp Ashraf under Saddam Hussein's regime. After the US invaded Iraq, the camp fell under US command and now that the Iraqi authorities want them out of Iraq. The US has negotiated a deal to move them into Camp Liberty near Baghdad Airport until they can be settled in another country by the UN.

AFP quoted an anonymous Iraqi interior minister official saying the camp was hit by about 40 rockets and mortars adding that UN special envoy in Iraq has urged the authorities to take immediate steps in investigating the matter.

Over three thousand members of the MEK who lived in Camp Ashraf until about a year ago are now in Liberty Camp awaiting resettlement.

The Paris-based MEK leadership has spoken out against the conditions of its members in Camp Liberty and have called for their return to Camp Ashraf.

The US recently removed the MEK from its list of terrorist organizations.
