Supreme Leader repeats call to end bickering
Ayatollah Khamenei

Iran’s Supreme Leader has called for an end to the disputes between the heads of the government’s executive and legislative branches.

Ayatollah Khamenei reportedly met with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani in Parliament on the night of Tuesday January 15.

MP Javad Karimi Ghodousi reported on the meeting, saying the two government leaders were warned by Ayatollah Khamenei at that meeting that “if they persisted in their disputes, they are guilty of treason.”

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appeared in Parliament on January 16 after MPs summoned him to answer questions regarding the crumbling economy and the diminished national currency. Most of his interrogators reported later that his explanations were in no way convincing.

Karimi Ghodousi told the Naseem News Agency on Wednesday January 30: “The leader of the Revolution stressed in the meeting that the head of the two branches of government need to forget the past and not keep grudges.”

MPs have repeatedly accused the Ahmadinejad administration of violating legislation passed by Parliament; another sore point has been the details of the all-encompassing project of restructuring government subsidies on energy and food staples.

Ahmadinejad, on the other hand, has accused the legislative branch of trying to overstep its jurisdiction and infringe on the powers of the executive branch.

Karimi Ghodousi added that during the meeting, the parties set at a series of regulations for subsidy restructuring. For one thing, the cash given to households to help them weather the sudden rise in prices caused by the restructuring process is to be doubled in the second phase of the plan
