Opposition leaders must be released: former president

Mohammad Khatami has called once more for the release of the Iranian opposition leaders during a visit with MirHosein Mousavi’s daughters.

The Kaleme website reported on Wednesday that the former Iranian president visited the daughters of opposition leaders who have been under house arrest since February of 2011, saying: “The tense political atmosphere of the country will be eased as soon as Zahra Rahnavard, MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi are released.”

He stressed that the continued detainment of these leaders is “neither befitting the country and the Revolution, nor is it in the interests of the regime.”

The opposition leaders have been under house arrest since they rallied their supporters to demonstrate in the streets in solidarity with the Arab uprisings in the region. Before that, Mousavi and Karroubi had challenged the 2009 election with allegations of vote fraud, which triggered repeated mass protests that in turn were met with severe violence from government forces.

The opposition leaders have been completely cut off from the public, and their families have very limited access to supervised visits with them.
