Supreme Leader announces Facebook page

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has joined Facebook, the senior cleric’s office announced.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s office has been active on the web for more than five years and, in addition to its own website, it has Twitter and Instagram accounts.

On Monday morning, Ayatollah Khamenei’s Twitter account Khamenei.ir reported that he has opened a Facebook page.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s tweets are followed by more than 72,000 viewers and, to date, the account has published more than 32,000 tweets.

His Facebook page indicates that it was opened on December 13. Meanwhile, the Iranian government continues to block social networking sites on the web, including Facebook and Twitter, and Iranian users can only access them through proxies.

The Islamic Republic denounced Facebook and Twitter as tools of the enemy following the 2009 election protests, when many protesters used the sites to connect with each other and organize street demonstrations.
