Iran accuses U.S. of airspace violations
Mohammad Khazai

Iran’s permanent representative at the United Nations has accused the United States of repeated violations of its airspace.

In a letter to Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council, Mohammad Khazai accused the United States of carrying out “illegal and provocative” operations in the Persian Gulf.

The letter, which was registered as a UN document, could by convention become a basis for legal action should the actions it complains about persist.

According to the letter, the U.S. carried out flights over coastal areas of Bushehr on seven occasions in October and most recently on November 1, when a U.S. drone entered Iranian airspace, disregarding all radio alerts.

In his letter, Khazai urged the UN Secretary General to warn the United States “against the continuation of acts in violation of international law and of the adverse consequences of any provocative and dangerous acts for which the United States government would be held responsible."

Earlier this month, Pentagon officials claimed that Iranian jet fighters had attacked an unarmed U.S. drone flying in the Persian Gulf region. They claimed the drone had been flying in international airspace. However, Iranian officials claimed the “U.S. drone was prowling over Khark Island,” an Iranian Island in the Persian Gulf.
