Iranian medical official chides UN over sanctions

The head of Iran’s Medical Council has written to Ban Ki-moon to protest against the UN General Secreatry’s “silence” in view of medical sanctions being imposed on Iran.

IRNA reports that Shahabeddin Sadr has written: “The inhumane actions of Western and European countries aligned with the maliciousness of the United States imposing a sanction on medical drugs and equipment has once more dropped the mask from the faces of world oppressors.”

The recent unilateral sanctions imposed by the EU and the United States on Iran have caused a shortage of medical drugs in the country.

Shahabeddin Sadr condemns the United Nations’ “inhumane silence”, which according to the head of the Medical Council, is “endangering lives of innocent men, women and children.”

Last week, the spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the sanctions on medical drugs and equipment are designed to foment public unrest in Iran.

The UN General Secretary has already confirmed in a report that the sanctions on Iran have caused inflation, rising unemployment and difficulty in securing vital drugs.

Reports indicate that patients in needs of drugs for thalassemia, MS, dialysis, diabetes, cancer and hemophilia are facing shortages for their life-threatening conditions.

Three months ago, the head of a special diseases foundation in Iran also wrote to UN Secretary General expressing grave concerns over the shortage of medical drugs in Iran for patients facing life-threatening diseases.
