Mehdi Hashemi, the jailed son of moderate cleric Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, has been transferred to hospital to undergo heart tests, his lawyer reports.
Mahmoud Alizadeh Tabatabai reported on Monday November 5 that Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani met his son this morning at Dey Hospital in Tehran and was informed of his son’s condition in prison.
The Fars news agency reports that, according to his lawyer, Mehdi Hashemi will return to Evin Prison once the tests are completed. Kaleme reports indicate that Hashemi’s doctor had made a request to prison authorities to allow for tests at an outside hospital after he sffered from heart complications while in custody. The request was reportedly granted.
Mehdi Hashemi is accused of fomenting unrest in the post-election crisis of 2009, when the victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was challenged by his opponents, leading to mass street protests.
Mehdi Hashemi returned to Iran in September after an absence from the country and reported to the judiciary. He has denied the charges against him.
