Iran urged to stop executions

Three senior UN human rights rapporteurs have called on Iran to stop the execution of 11 prisoners set to be hanged today, October 13.

The Associated Press reports that Ahmed Shaeed, the UN special rapporteur on Iran, Christof Heyns, a UN expert on extrajudicial executions, and Juan E. Mendez, the UN special rapporteur on torture, have called on Iran to “stop the executions of Saeed Sedghi and 10 other individuals scheduled for Saturday, 13 October.”

Saeed Sedghi was reportedly sentence to death on June 2 for drug-related offences but, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sedghi was tortured and did not receive a fair trial.

The 11 individuals mentioned by the UN rapporteurs have been transferred to solitary confinement in the past few days in preparation for their execution.

Families of the prisoners have reportedly made numerous appeals to the authorities to stop the executions but to no avail so far.

Two days ago, the authorities also arrested Majid Sedghi, Saeed Sedghi’s brother, for talking to foreign media and publicizing his brother’s situation.
