Iran uses summit as chance to sell oil
Rostam Ghassemi

Iran’s Oil Minister says his ministry is negotiating with buyers of Iranian oil at the 16th NAM summit in Tehran.

Rostam Ghassemi was quoted by Iranian state media outlet IRNA, saying: “Since 50 percent of the global market is held by the Non-Aligned Movement member states, we are negotiating with these countries.”

IRNA reports that the minister named India and South Africa as being among the countries that his ministry is holding talks with regarding Iran’s oil exports.

Ghassemi added that the results of these negotiations will be announced after the conclusion of the NAM summit.

Iran has been hosting the Non-Aligned Movement summit since last Sunday. Following two days of conferences by government experts, yesterday the foreign and deputy foreign ministers held a conference to ratify a draft document of resolutions.

Today, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Tehran, and the next two days will be allotted to a meeting of the leaders of the member states.

The Oil Ministry has announced that it will take the opportunity to negotiate with many of the member states in attendance to devise ways of overcoming the oil sanctions currently imposed on Iran by the United States and the European Union.
