Guards official reacts to calls for U.S. compromise
Yadollah Javani

Yadollah Javani, a senior Revolutionary Guards official, says some of the Islamic Republic establishment and prominent figures are calling for compromise with world powers and the re-establishment of relations with the United States.

The former head of the political bureau of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) told a gathering of IRGC and Basij forces in Yazd Province that two divergent points of view are currently at play in the country: one being “firm resistance” against the U.S. as advocated by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei; the other, “capitulating to pressures from super powers and re-establishing relations with the U.S.”

The report on ILNA quotes Javani as saying that the first view will lead to “triumph” over the enemies of the Revolution while the second would only lead to further pressure from them.

The top IRGC commander went on to add that Ayatollah Khamenei is critical of the second view, proposed by officials and prominent figures in the country, and said that this approach can only mean “altering our values and ideals in favour of expediency.”

Javani said protecting the ideals and foundations of the Revolution depends on following the leader of the Islamic Republic and refusing to capitulate to enemies.

The IRGC commander referred to ongoing sanctions and their effects on the Iranian economy, urging everyone to devise appropriate strategies to halt rising prices.

In the past year, the U.S. and EU have taken severe measures against Iran, imposing sanctions on its financial institutions and oil exports.

The world powers say Iran’s nuclear program may be a front for nuclear weapon construction. Iran denies the allegations and says it has a right to pursue its nuclear activities which are only geared to the peaceful exploitation of nuclear power.
