Judiciary ponders how to execute “adulteress”
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani

The Iranian judiciary is deliberating over how to execute Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was convicted of “adultery” and “the murder of her husband.”

ISNA reports that Judge Malek Ajdar Sharfi said on Sunday: “We are trying to determine whether or not death by stoning can be changed to death by hanging.”

Ashtiani was sentenced to stoning last year, but that was held off due to international outrage.

Judge Ajdar Sharifi added: “[Ms. Ashtiani] was charged with two crimes of adultery, which is punishable by stoning, and complicity in the murder of her husband, for which she had been sentenced to ten years.”

He added that the head of the judiciary has said that if stoning is not possible, then the death penalty can be carried out by hanging.
