Iranian authorities release labour activist

Ebrahim Madadi

Iranian labour activists have welcomed the release of Ebrahim Madadi, the deputy head of the Tehran Bus Drivers Union.

Iranian labour media report that Madadi was temporarily released from Evin Prison yesterday after three years in jail. He was arrested in 2007 and sentenced to three and a half years in prison on security charges. His sentence will be completed next May.

International labour right groups have also welcomed the release and issued a statement calling for justice for all labour activists in Iran.

Reza Shahabi a member of the Tehran Vahed Company bus drivers union, is another Iranian labour activist currently behind bars. He has been detained since June of 2010, and human rights groups report that he is currently on a hunger strike to protest his undetermined judicial state.
