Mohammad Javad Larijani, the head of the Iranian judiciary’s Human Rights Council, has condemned the most recent UN Human Rights Committee resolution against Iran, saying: “A number of very ridiculous shows have entered the official literature of the United Nations under the name of human rights.”
Speaking on the sidelines of the UN’s Human Rights Committee meeting yesterday, where a resolution against Iran was approved, Larijani told IRNA: “This resolution, like the resolutions about nuclear energy and terrorism, is approved merely to pressure Iran, and in reality it is a new wave of aggressions perpetrated by the U.S. and its Western allies.”
Several new resolutions against Iran have been approved in the past week by international organizations and world powers, after the latest report from the International Atomic Energy Agency expressed concern over Iran’s nuclear program.
Larijani went on to add that the defenders of human rights these days are countries that have the “ugliest report cards” regarding their own human rights violations.
On Monday, the UN issued a resolution condemning “human rights violations” in Iran with 86 votes in favour, 32 against and 59 abstaining.
Larijani said that reports given by Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, were a reiteration of viewpoints of “terrorist groups and organizations that oppose the Islamic Republic.”
He added: “Mr. Ban Ki-moon should not get his information from Clinton’s office at the White House. His report was a copy of U.S. reports.”
He went on to add that Iran is “extremely concerned” about the shortcomings of the United Nations under the leadership of Ban Ki-moon.
