Iranian leader backs intelligence minister
Ayatollah Khamenei

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the Iranian parliament have confirmed that Heydar Moslehi remains in his post as intelligence minister, after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad approved his resignation on Sunday.

Iranian media reports that Ayatollah Khamenei has officially confirmed Heydar Moslehi’s position as head of the ministry of intelligence, in a letter to Moslehi dated April 19.

The letter urges Moslehi to persist with the “vital domestic and international operations of the ministry of intelligence with the support of the government and other institutions.” and to refrain from allowing any frailty in the actions of this “vital organ.”

Furthermore, 216 MPs signed a letter to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announcing their support for the minister of intelligence and urging the president to stop “enemies from taking advantage” of these developments.

The MPs add that changing the leadership of the ministry of intelligence under current conditions is not in the country’s interest, adding that Moslehi has performed his duties well.

On Sunday night, Iranian media reported that the Minister of Intelligence had turned in his resignation, which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had accepted, appointing Moslehi to another position as his personal advisor on intelligence matters.

Two hours later, the media published another report indicating that Ayatollah Khamenei had overruled the resignation and Moslehi would continue in his position.
