Iranian opposition commends people’s presence on tough day of protests

Iranian protesters closed a tough day of protests with shouts of "Allah-o-Akbar" from their rooftops in various parts of Tehran.

At the end of the day of proposed protests by Iranian opposition, reports from Tehran indicate that while people came to the streets in large number, widespread deployment of security forces prevented them from gathering in large scales.

Zamaneh was informed by eyewitnesses that even groups of ten walking silently together were not tolerated by the vast number of security and Basij forces deployed all across Tehran.  "Every few minutes the special guards or plain clothes forces would attack small groups of people lollering at them," an eyewitness told Zamaneh.

Heavy deployment of security forces were reported all across Tehran as well as other major cities such as Esfahan, Shiraz, Rasht and Mahabad.

On Monday, Iranians took to the streets in tens of thousands, after MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi called for a rally in solidarity with the recent Arab uprisings.

The two ooposition leaders have been put under house arrest and Mousavi’s home as well as the alley leading to his house has been fortified with a steel gate to prevent any contact with the outside world.

A spokesman for Mehdi Karroubi lauded the participation of protesters in today’s protests which were also called by the opposition to commemorate Saneh Jaleh and Mohammad Mokhtari who were killed when security forces clashed with protesters last Monday.

"In view of the heavy security deployment," Mojtaba Vahedi told Radio Farda; "gatherings and demonstrations were way beyond our expectations."

Vahedi mocked FARS news agency for reporting on the one hand that everything was "completely calm in Tehran", and on the other that Ms. Faezeh Hashemi was arrested for inciting protests."

State news agencies reported that Faezeh Hashemi, daughter of former Iranian president and current Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, was briefly arrested for inciting unrest.

Mehdi Karroubi’s aide went on to express certainty that since people’s demands for freedom and the right to choose have not been met, protests would continue.

The member of coordination council of the Green Path of Hope added that the council has already planned the next date for street protests and it will be soon announced.
